Once upon a time before Quorn mince, substitute veggie chicken and tofu there was Sosmix. A popular meat alternative for vegetarians that could be used to make up sausages, burgers, pies etc.
Since then it has slowly gone out of fashion and is increasingly difficult to get your hands on. Which I discovered to be a true tradegy after James and I made up some spectacular sausages rolls with the stuff.
With this I got to use some of my new HomeSense baking buys that helped along the way.
The store has a whole host of equipment for all your baking and cooking needs. Frequently I’ll find something I didn’t know I needed and it’ll become a staple bit of kit in the kitchen.
We made up three different sausage roll flavours; caramelised onion and stilton, sundried tomatoes, chilli, basil and olive paste, and cranberry sauce, brie and bacon (we weren’t being too strict on the vegetarian side of things as neither of us are and who can resist adding a slab of bacon into the mix!).
We unrolled the puff pastry and cut it into three equal rectangles.
Adding a line down the middle of each of the sauces.
We prepped the rest of the ingredients, incorporating the stilton, bacon and sundried tomatoes into the three separate sosmix mixtures.
We rolled up each piece of puff pastry into one long sausage roll, then cut it into eight smaller chunks.
Brushing with milk to give them that golden brown coat.
These bad boys are ready to eat after 20 minutes in the oven.
Once they’re out, the biggest challenge is not eating them all in one sitting.
The perfect homemade comfort snack and dare I say, a great Christmas treat.
