The Ox, Bristol
A hidden gem is probably the perfect way to describe The Ox in Bristol’s city centre. Tucked away in the basement of a building along Corn Street you would barely know it’s existence if you were passing by but with a high reputation for great steak they couldn’t stay hidden from me for very long.
They offer a great early evening deal if you get there between 5-7pm. For £12.50 you can get a 6oz Rump steak, a sauce, fries and a glass of house wine. Dream combination at a bargain.
Situated in the basement, you feel as though you are stepping back in time to the same period of Bugsy Malone (minus the machine guns and children dressed as adults). With wood-panelled walls lined with antique mirrors, the ceiling a deep red colour adorned with unique grape-shaped hanging lights and a well stocked bar greeting you as soon as you arrive.
The atmosphere is warm, which is aided by the staff who are inviting and really attentive.
We started the evening with some bread and olives, along with a couple of great cocktails.
This was not long after followed by a beautiful piece of steak, cooked to perfection with an incredible chargrilled flavour. A rich peppercorn sauce only enhanced the experience.
Having peaked and impressed us with the mains (and being quite full), we didn’t consider having a pudding. Since then I’ve heard they do one of my favourites very well; rice pudding. Meaning only one thing: I’m going to have to return very soon.
The menu goes beyond just steak but if you’re going to go to The Ox, steak is all you really want.
